The Flood of ’72: A 40 Year Retrospective

Remember last fall's flooding? .

For residents who remember St. Agnes, 40 years ago, September's flooding may seem minor.

Take a look back at the storm at this year's the Patapsco Heritage Greenway annual meeting which will feature a 40 year retrospective of Agnes and its aftermath.

Featured speakers include:

  • Andrew J. Miller, Ph.D., an Associate Professor at the University of Maryland at Baltimore County in the Department of Geography. He has done extensive research and writing in the environmental field.  He will bring his expertise on flooding to his remarks on the 1972 Agnes Flood.
  • Robert Miller has long lived on the ridge overlooking the Patapsco River Valley below the Route 40 bridge. After retiring from the Hopkins Applied Physics Lab, he has pursued videography. He will show movies he shot during and after Agnes.
  • Enalee Bounds founded the Ellicott’s Country Store with her mother and sister 50 years ago and pioneered the renaissance of Main Street in Ellicott City.  She founded and edited The Heritage from 1974-1988 and served as President of Historic Ellicott City.  She will give an eye witness account of the flood.
  • John Teichmoeller is a retired financial advisor and former board member of the Patapsco Heritage Greenway Board.  He has had a life-long interest in transportation, particularly ships and railroads. He will talk about the impact of  Agnes  on the railroad in the Patapsco River Valley.
