Join Friends of the Patapsco Female Institute for a day of fun and history at the park! Pack a picnic lunch to enjoy on the grounds, or just stop up to see the sights, enjoy a docent-led tour of the ruins, and learn from our exciting speakers and demonstrators. Our theme this fall is “The Institute During the Civil War,” and our guests will include:

Grover Hinds - “Almira H.L. Phelps and the Patapsco Female Institute”
Lee Preston - “North and South Meet at the Institute”
Dr. Edward G. Longacre - "Yankee Recruits in a 'Den of Secession': the 12th New Jersey Volunteers in Ellicott Mills, September-December 1862.”
Jack O’Brien - Historic Firearm Demonstration & Firings

The brief (20-30 minute) talks will take place under the tent between 12:30 and 2:30, with demonstrations and tours interspersed. We’ll have costume try-ons and other kid-friendly activities throughout the day, as well as a temporary exhibit about Ellicott City in the Civil War, particularly with regard to Camp Johnson and the PFI.

There will be a free shuttle from the Ellicott City Circuit Court parking lot (near Mt. Ida) up to the park, Courtesy of Howard County Department of Recreation and Parks. The shuttle will run as needed throughout the event, with a brief break around 2:30 PM.  Event presented by Friends of the Patapsco Female Institute.

See you at the park!
