Choose Civility Symposium: Building a Responsible, Bully-Free Community

  • Howard County students, who attended targeted daytime sessions, will provide findings from their earlier workshops in a student panel moderated by Hammond High School Principal Marcy Leonard at the beginning of the evening.
  • During the featured panel moderated by NPR's Korva Coleman, panelists (Macavinta, Leonard, and Sachs) will present a lively dialogue on how civil understanding, respect, and behavior can have a positive impact in eradicating bullying.
  • Students will be encouraged to take the lessons of the symposium back to their schools and continue the message in classrooms and assemblies, through social media, and by modeling civil behavior.
  • U.S. Congressman Elijah Cummings (Honorary Chair of the Choose Civility Board of Advisors), Howard County Chair Dr. Calvin Ball, HCC President Kathleen Hetherington, HCPSS Chief Academic Officer Linda Wise, and Howard County Library System President & CEO Valerie J. Gross will offer opening remarks.
  • The 2011 Choose Civility Symposium is sponsored by: Ascend One; The Business Monthly; CareFirst BlueCross BlueShield; Columbia Association; Friends of Howard County Library; Gallery 44; Howard Community College; Howard County General Hospital, A Member of Johns Hopkins Medicine; Howard County Public School System; Howard County Youth Program; and Nightmare Graphics.
