Ellicott City Student a Finalist in Short Story Contest

A Centennial High School senior's story about an emotional conversation between a young woman and her ex-boyfriend is among those up for recognition.

A Centennial High School student is among the 12 finalists selected from a pool of more than 200 for recognition in the Gaithersburg Book Festival’s third annual High School Student Short Story Contest.

Jennifer Baik, a senior, is among the students entered from 16 jurisdictions throughout DC, Maryland and Virginia, according to a release.

Baik also was a finalist in 2012.

The winning stories will be selected by New York Times best-selling author Caroline Leavitt.

Baik’s short story, about an emotional conversation between a young woman on her 21st birthday with her former high school boyfriend, can be found here.

Want to help Baik? Give the story a “thumbs up,” which is used to tally the “Fan Favorite Category.”

The first, second and third-place winners, along with a fan favorite, will be announced at the festival on May 18 at 12:30 p.m.

Winners will receive $100, $50 and $25 gift certificates, respectively.  The prizes are provided by the Johns Hopkins University Montgomery County Campus.

The festival is held on the grounds of Gaithersburg City Hall, in Olde Towne Gaithersburg. Admission is free.
