Ulman Talks Speed Cameras, Guns on Midday

After some technical difficulty, at 14:35, Ken Ulman joins Harford County Executive David Craig and Baltimore County Executive Kevin Kamenetz on WYPR's Midday with Dan Rodricks to talk about statewide issues. 

Ulman said officials need to present a gas tax plan that citizens can buy into – one that lays out a vision for where money will be spent despite the “back room dealing,” going on in Annapolis.

On speed cameras, Ulman said if legislators want to “strengthen the rules, we’re more than willing to participate,” but he wants to make sure that the speed camera program in Howard County remains trustworthy.

The program aired on Tuesday Jan. 8, the day the school safety task force has its first meeting, in response to the Newtown, Mass. shooting.  “We’re doing a lot of things right to keep our buildings safe,” Ulman said and mentioned that every Howard County Public High School has a police officer. “But if there are things we can be doing better, we want to take a look,” he said.

Referring to the national discussion on assault rifles and a recent shooting at a Perry Hall high school,  Ulman said “When I think about ... the kind of gun that the young man had in Baltimore County versus the one that was used in Connecticut, the more bullets you can throw out there in a quick period of time, the more damage you can do.”
