Ellicott City Liquor Store Temporarily Loses License To Sell Alcohol

Three other stores received fines.

Howard County's Alcohol Beverage Hearing Board has temporarily suspended the liquor licenses at two establishments—one in Ellicott City and another in Elkridge—based on violations including selling alcohol to a minor, the Howard County Police Department reported.

Three other businesses were issued citations, according to the report, which said the rulings related to a sting police conducted over the winter.

In November, a 19-year-old police cadet tried to purchase alcohol as part of the operation, police said. In five establishments, the cashier conducted the transaction without asking for identification or proof of age, the statement said.

According to the Howard County Police Department, two businesses will have their licenses revoked temporarily as a result:

  • St. John’s Liquors at 9150 Baltimore National Pike in Ellicott City will lose its liquor license for three consecutive weekends—May 9–12, May 16–19 and May 23–26. St. John’s Liquors was also cited because Howard County requires the licensee on the liquor license to live in Howard County, and its resident licensee moved to Colorado without notifying the liquor board administrator. It was fined $2,200.
  • Lark Brown Liquors at 6590-B Old Waterloo Road in Elkridge has its license suspended for three consecutive weekends as well: May 16-19, May 23-26 and May 30-June 2. It must pay a $2,500 fine.

Police said the board issued citations and fines for three other locations: $700 for Vinoland Liquors (a.k.a. The Twisted Cork) at 6524 Old Waterloo Road in Elkridge; $500 for Village Liquors at 12210 Clarksville Pike in Clarksville; and $250 for Glenwood Wine & Spirits at 2465 Maryland Route 97 in Glenwood.

St. John's Liquors and Lark Brown Liquors were given harsher penalties because they failed the test on top of having previous infractions, the Howard County Times reported.

Police said the periodic tests are part of an ongoing effort to combat underage drinking in Howard County, and anyone aware of establishments selling alcohol to minors may contact the police tip line at 410-313-STOP.
