Howard County Leaders to Screen Bully Film

The county executive, school system and bar association to show movie on bullying culture at The Mall in Columbia.

Howard County government, educators and lawyers are sponsoring a showing of Bully at this fall.

The film, a 2011 documentary about children’s experiences with bullying in school, will be screened for adults over the age of 18 on Sept. 29 and Oct. 6 at the AMC Theatre in Columbia mall.

County Executive Ken Ulman announced the screening of the film—which is only showing at select theaters—in a prepared statement Tuesday.

“We, as a community, must pay attention to the children in our schools who are potentially vulnerable to feeling unsafe and unprotected,” said Ulman in the statement.

“As a parent, I happily participated in this initiative to raise awareness of an unfortunate reality in our society and to help ensure our students receive the quality educational experience that Howard County is known for,” Ulman said.

A representative from the Howard County Bar Foundation brought it to Ulman's attention that she would like the film to be screened, said Kevin Enright, spokesman for the Howard County Government. In addition, the Ulman administration saw that bullying was bubbling up to the surface as a problem, according to Enright.

“Over the past several months we have heard from many parents, students, school employees, and police personnel about issues surrounding bullying—and we are hoping this movie is one other way to increase the discussion and awareness of bullying issues that are nationwide," said Enright.

"We fully believe that the Howard County Police and the County School System are working hard at addressing this very real societal problem," said Enright.

The Howard County Bar Foundation and Howard County Public School System officials could not be reached immediately for comment.

Tickets are available for purchase online for $4, a reduced rate the Bar Foundation of Howard County made possible, according to a press release. Adults over the age of 18 can see Bully on Sept. 29 and Oct. 6 at the AMC Theatre in Columbia mall. Tickets will be $5 at the door; only cash will be accepted.
