Howard County Gets Money for Cycling Infrastructure

The governor has awarded more than $150,000 in grants for bike paths, signage and other improvements.

In an effort to encourage counties to improve bicycling conditions around Maryland, the Governor announced the allocation of more than $2 million in Bikeways Program grants.

Howard County will receive about $155,000 to improve cycling conditions in Clarksville and Columbia. 

In Clarksville:

  • $80,000 to pave 4-foot shoulder along an S-curve on Guilford Road.

In Columbia:

  • $25,000 to develop a bike route between Columbia and Fort Meade with the State Highway Authority, Howard and Anne Arundel Counties and local constituents.
  • $50,000 to develop crosswalks, signage and other safety measures in Columbia.

“These grants are a great way to help local jurisdictions make key connections to build a more comprehensive bike network that will benefit our citizens,” Gov. Martin O’Malley said in a statement.

“By getting out and taking a bike ride, we can learn to enjoy more of Maryland’s natural treasures, help reduce the impact on the land, improve our fitness and enhance our quality of life.” 

In all, $2.5 million was awarded to 10 counties and Baltimore City, along with other municipalities for cycling infrastructure projects.
