Robberies in Columbia and Jessup, Break-ins in Several Towns: Howard County Crime Roundup

Columbia: Robbery

A female victim was getting into a parked car on the 9700 block of Summer Park Court when a man came up to her, assaulted her and stole her purse.

The robbery was reported at about 8 p.m. on Tuesday, April 26.

The suspect was described as a black male, 5-foot-8, with a thin build and dreadlocked hair, and wearing black pants, a black shirt and a red baseball cap.

Jessup: Robbery

A person was on the 8300 block of Ari Court when a masked man came up, showed a gun and demanded money. The man got away on foot toward Castleford Drive.

The robbery was reported at 10:55 p.m. on Tuesday, April 26.

The suspect was described as a black male, 6-foot, 180 pounds, and wearing a dark, hooded sweatshirt, a black mask and light blue jeans.

Columbia: Break-in (with arrest)

A Pennsylvania man was arrested after a break-in that police believe was caused by the suspect thinking he had gone inside a different home than he was actually in.

Derrick T. Hatchell, 30, of 203 Oak St. in Ambler, has been charged with one count of fourth-degree burglary, according to online court records.

He is accused of walking in the front door of a residence on the 9700 block of Early Spring Way at about 10:50 p.m. on Tuesday, April 26.

Police say Hatchell grabbed a drink out of the refrigerator and sat down in the living room. A resident told him to leave, and arriving officers found him outside of the home, police said.

Columbia: Break-in

Nothing was reported stolen following a break-in on the 6100 block of Sunny Spring. The suspect or suspects got inside through an unlocked front window. The break-in happened sometime between 7:45 a.m. and 5:15 p.m. on Tuesday, April 26.

Columbia: Break-in attempt

No entry was gained during an attempted break-in at a residence on the 9100 block of Helaine Hamlet Way. The suspect or suspects tried to get inside by tampering with the front door. The attempted break-in happened sometime between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. on Thursday, April 21.

Ellicott City: Burglary

Cash was stolen from a safe following a burglary at North Ridge Liquors on the 3300 block of North Ridge Road. The suspect or suspects pried open a door to an office. The burglary happened sometime between 12 p.m. on Friday, April 22, and 7:30 p.m. on Monday, April 25.

Laurel: Burglary

Police are asking for help finding a suspect seen fleeing the rear of a home that had been broken into on the 8600 block of River Glade Run.

Coins and jewelry were stolen from the home. The burglary was reported at 1:10 p.m. on Tuesday, April 26.

The suspect was described as a white male, about 25 years old, 5-foot-6 with a stocky build, clean-shaven, wearing a white shirt, black shorts, sunglasses and a white towel wrapped around his head. He was also carrying a fishing pole.

Police are asking anyone who has seen the suspect to call 410-313-STOP (7867).

Laurel: Break-in

Nothing was reported stolen following a break-in at a residence on the 8800 block of Deep Water Lane. The suspect or suspects got inside after removing a screen to the garage, tampering with a door to the garage, and then going inside the home through an unlocked door. The break-in happened sometime between 8 a.m. and 2:45 p.m. on Tuesday, April 26.

Elkridge: Burglary

A laptop and coins were stolen from a residence on the 5900 block of River Road. The suspect or suspects got inside after forcing open a rear door. The burglary was reported at 2:23 p.m. on Monday, April 25.

Elkridge: Break-in (with arrest)

An Elkridge man was arrested following reports of a break-in on the 6600 block of Washington Boulevard.

Joshua M. Schairer, 31, of 6636 Washington Blvd., has been charged with one count of second-degree burglary, three counts of fourth-degree burglary, and two counts of attempted theft, according to online court records.

The break-in was reported at about 6:08 p.m. on Tuesday, April 26. Police said they found Schairer under a mobile home with burglar’s tools in his possession.

Glenelg: Burglary

Mail was stolen from a residence on the 13900 block of Ryon Drive. The suspect or suspects got inside after breaking a basement window. The burglary happened sometime between Wednesday, April 20, and Tuesday, April 26.

Woodstock: Burglary

Copper piping was stolen from an unlocked house under construction on the 10700 block of Taylor Farm Road. The burglary happened sometime between 4 p.m. on Thursday, April 21, and 12:45 p.m. on Monday, April 25.

Columbia: Vehicle thefts (and one attempt)

- A gray 2008 Honda Accord with Maryland license plate 5GAP33 was stolen from the 9500 block of Clocktower Lane. It was reported stolen at 11:11 p.m. on Monday, April 25.

- A green 1995 Volkswagen Jetta was stolen from the 5000 block of Bucketpost Court but was later recovered. It was reported stolen at 8:59 a.m. on Monday, April 25 but was found on Old Montgomery Road.

- An unidentified vehicle on the 10300 block of Swift Stream Place had its ignition tampered with. The attempted vehicle theft was reported at 8:46 a.m. on Monday, April 25.

Ellicott City: Recovered vehicle

A tan 2009 Toyota Corolla that had been stolen last week from the 4400 block of Stonecrest Drive has been recovered. It was found nearby at the intersection of Autumn Rust Road and Trail View Drive.
