Overnight Break-In at Burleigh Manor: Ellicott City Crime Roundup

The Howard County Police Department provided the following information.

Money was stolen from a wallet inside a residence on the 10300 block of Royal Ascot Ct. between midnight and 4:30 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 29. The garage was open, and the suspect reportedly entered through the garage and an unlocked door to access the wallet, which was in the den. 

There was a break-in attempt on the 9800 block of Longview Dr. Half the glass was broken on the rear sliding glass door of the residence, but police said there were no signs of entry. The incident took place between 11:30 a.m. on Sept. 24 and 4:15 p.m. on Sept. 28. 

The ignition was ripped out of a 2003 Jeep Cherokee on the 8500 block of Wheatfield Way. The incident was reported at 9:37 a.m. on Friday, Sept. 28.

A Yamaha dirt bike was stolen from an unlocked shed on the 2900 block of Rogers Ave. The theft occurred sometime between Sept. 9 and Sept. 29.

I was confused by headline. thought it was a break in at the middle school. THEN realized it was the neighborhood

You will note that in both of the cases where items were actually stolen, the perpetrator didn't have to break in, pick a lock, etc.; all he (she? they?) had to do was look for open garage doors and unlocked sheds. Close and lock your doors, people! Not sure what happened with the Cherokee; there was no mention of forced vs. unforced entry.

Paul, you hit the nail on the head. The number of break-ins where perpetrators enter through open doors is huge. I've become much more vigilant about locking my car and house doors since regularly reading the blotter.
