The Laurel man convicted of shooting his estranged girlfriend and another man at a Shipley's Grant nail salon was sentenced to 65 1/2 years in prison on Tuesday at Howard County Circuit Court.

Tuan Minh Pham, 37, was found guilty by a jury in October of attempted murder and other charges for shooting Lan Hoang Mai Phan and Phuong Thanh Do at the Ellicott City salon in July 2012. Phan and Do both survived the shooting.

"I tried to love him and look past years of abuse... I trusted this man and he tried to take my life," said Phan at the sentencing hearing, according to Wayne Kirwan, a spokesperson for the county state's attorney's office.

She added that the couple's two children live with nightmares as they try to forget the harrowing events, according to Kirwan.

Pham walked into the nail salon where Phan worked and shot her once in the shoulder. Outside, he shot Do four times. Do is the brother of a man dating Pham at the time, according to Kirwan.

The shooting was captured on video surveillance and played during the trial.

For eight months Pham eluded police, hiding out in Virginia, before turning himself in at Howard County Police headquarters on March 15, 2013.

At the sentencing hearing Pham apologized for what happened through a Vietnamese interpreter, but blamed his former girlfriend for the disharmony in their relationship, according to Kirwan.

Circuit Court Judge William V. Tucker said that Pham went "from a normal, non-violent person into a fit and rage" and said he imposed the lengthy sentence to protect society as well as Phan and Do.

In all, Pham was convicted of attempted first-degree murder, attempted second-degree murder, two counts of the use of a handgun in a violent crime, one count of reckless endangerment, two counts of violating a protective order while possessing a firearm.

Lots of probablys and no facts Jay, as usual.

Thanks J Leland, you are right he has no facts correct. He is a US Citizen. He got what he deserved (and deserved even longer), he shot my friend once which led to many surgeries and her friend 4 times and they have been suffering ever since, in fact, almost died. I do agree he deserved the death penalty but that is our justice system. I'm happy my friend can have some peace of mind that he is behind bars for a very long time.

A 'citizen' who can't even speak English, or a non-citizen, was NOT my main point. That point was ancillary to the main point of taxpayers in the state having to pay for this animal forever. He SHOULD have received the death penalty; that was my main point. And the fact that he IS a citizen as you state, is atrocious with speaking no English. Scum of the earth is what he is, you two both know it. That's the main fact. Geesh.

Why not just state your point then Jay, and cut out the usual BS and "probablys" for a change? Geesh..

J: Why don't you just state your OWN opinion instead of slamming others ? Do you have ANY intelligent opinions to share? Prove it please. I've been waiting for something 1/2way intelligent on an important topic, to come from you without just criticizing someone else. I hear crickets chirping between your ears. Man-up or STFU

Jay, My "own opinion" should be very clear to you; I am opposed to reactionary, regressive, racially prejudicial and illogical comments being brought into every news item. The type of hateful and bigoted comments you make do nothing to further the logical discussion of a topic and are nothing but emotionally charged sound bites with no substance or constructive input. Discussion board posters like you jump to conclusions, stereotype, constantly post off-topic and offer nothing but venomous disputation. Pardon me if I don't lower myself to this type of useless and hateful discourse. Is that enough opinion for you?
