The graduation will be held at 1 p.m. this Saturday in Columbia

They've put out structure fires, rappelled down bridges and, on Saturday, Trainee Class 27 for the Howard County Department of Fire and Rescue Services will graduate.

The trainee class of 38 firefighters includes former military members; career switchers from industries like banking, chemical engineering, and the U.S. Secret Service; as well as several who will carry on their family's legacy of fire department service, according to a statement from the department.

The trainees have spent more than 1100 hours training over the past six months, learning firefighting, emergency vehicle operation, rescue services and how to handle hazardous materials.

The trainees will officially graduate at 1 p.m. on Saturday July 13 at Bridgeway Community Church, 9189 Red Branch Road in Columbia.
