Congratulations! 23 Graduate from Police Academy 37

The new officers were sworn in Thursday night.

The three women and 20 men of Police Academy 37 were sworn in at Bridgeway Community Church in Columbia Wednesday night by Howard County Clerk of Court Wayne Robey.

"You are going to be asked to run toward trouble when others run away. You are going to see the worst that people can do to each other," Howard County Police Chief William McMahon told the graduates.

"Don't be afraid to be heroes."

This is more evidence against a discriminatory gender pay gap. Police officers, especially unionized officers in Howard County, are very well paid. Out of the 23 academy graduates, only two appear to be female (based on the names and the photo). Just saying.

And based on the first sentence. Just saying. But now you're conflating issues; as long as the women on the force are paid the same as the men, I don't think anyone would say this was an example of a discriminatory pay gap.

You're missing the point. Women tend to take careers that pay less, as the lack of women relative to the men in this class shows. Careers involving risk and hard work with inflexible schedules are dominated by men. And those careers just pay more.
