Columbia Driver Hits Police Car, Charged with DUI

Yolanda Murchison jumped a curb by Route 1 in North Laurel and struck a marked Howard County police cruiser, according to police.

A Columbia woman is in jail and a police officer is in the hospital after a Saturday morning crash on Route 1 in North Laurel, according to the Howard County Police Department (HCPD).

At approximately 1:24 a.m. on July 28, Yolanda Murchison was driving her Chevrolet Cruze northbound on Route 1 at Davis Avenue when she "jumped the curb and drove across the median and struck the right rear of the police vehicle," according to a statement from HCPD.

The marked police car was at a stop sign about to turn on Davis Avenue at the time of the crash, HCPD spokesman Cpl. Christopher Adams told Patch.

The police officer was taken by ambulance to , where HCPD said he was in stable condition Saturday morning.

Murchison, 30, was arrested and charged with driving under the influence (DUI), according to the statement from police.

"She was charged with DUI only," Bryce Buell, spokesman for HCPD, told Patch. "However, there will be additional charges pending the completion of the investigation."

The police statement said alcohol and failure to stay right of center were factors in the crash.

According to online court records, Murchison was charged June 24 for driving with a suspended license; in that incident, she was on Route 1 at Howard Street, approximately 2 miles north of the July 28 crash.

Murchison was at the Howard County Detention Center Saturday morning.

BOH - Agree 100%. Driving should be limited to those who do so carefully and respect the rules of the road. This "lady" has had more than enough chances; she is a threat to all of us. How much does it take to pull a license for good? Of course, she'll just drive without a license then. Seizing any vehicles she is driving should help with that; no matter to who owns them. MD (and Howard County's) treatment of drunk drivers is toothless; all first time offenders with no personal injury involved get forgiven (PBJ with no points on their records and no official guilty finding). Need to jail all offenders; everyone knows you shouldn't drive drunk, those who do should be jailed for a lengthy period of time with no forgiveness for first time offenses. Stats show one has to drive drunk many times before being stopped, so a first time DUI isn't the first time they've driven impaired.

Everyone makes mistakes - once is a mistake, twice is a habit, and this, well this is more like an addiction. My issue would be with the court system. Sat in court one afternoon and watched the judge postpone every single case that day (did someone have a golf game?). The States attorney begged the judge not to postone one specific case stating that it had taken them 4 years to locate the defendant and in the those 4 years she had racked up 3 more charges Guess what .......postponed! Wander what ever happened to that defendant? Probably still racking up charges with no forwarding address :)

Seriously, leave this poor woman alone. I happen to know she is a lovely person and does not deserve this level of scrutiny of her life and personal business. Stop looking up her record online too, that just makes you a creep with too much time on their hands.
