Moms Talk: Too Much Homework?

Is all that take-home school necessary?

Welcome to "Moms Talk," our weekly Wednesday feature about a parenting topic of local interest.

Each week we'll post a question by a mom about being a mom.

Join the conversation with your comments, questions and answers to keep the discussion rolling. Feel free to use links to point your neighbors toward businesses, services, events or volunteer organizations in our Rockville Patch directory or calendar.

We'll also have members of our Moms Council weigh in with questions and comments.

Now, on to this week's discussion ...

In Sunday's "Mom and More" column, Amy Mascott wrote about .

She also discusses how as a mom she sometimes feels that the homework her wee ones bring home is too much, but as a teacher she understands its importance.

It seems like there is more homework at a younger age each year, so I'm not sure what's going on in the early primary grades at this point. For middle school, I'd say the kids have time to do what is required of them. To help my kids with homework, I have one place in the house where everything they need can be found. When they were younger they did their homework in the kitchen while I made dinner. Now that they're older, they generally save it until later but the rule is they have to have it completed by bedtime.

My 7 year old doesn't understand why his sister's are not able to play with him. His sisters are in middle school and high school. The high schooler has a heavy GT course load with anywhere from 2-4 hours of homework per night. The middle schooler is at about 1-1.5 hours per night. My son is in 2nd grade...he has about 30 minutes if he gets the homework done without excessive fussing...which does not happen. Homework is a given in our house. Kids have to do homework. Period.

Homework just has to be done. I find for the most part there is not an overabundance, although there are the occasionaly times where it is piled on. My kids don't usually like to do it right after school because of activities, play dates or just needing some down time, so some nights get late, but we try to get most of it done before dinner since we tend to eat on the later side.
