Husband and Wife Opening Skate Shop on Main Street

The skate shop and art gallery hopes to attract youth to Ellicott City's Main Street.

A skate shop, men's apparel and art supplies store plans to open on Ellicott City's Main Street next week.

The Good Roll Shop and Gallery is the idea of local couple Tim and Sarah LeBon. The store will offer items like skateboards, helmets, wheels, bearings, custom rails, shirts, and hoodies as well as journals, colored pencils, pens and writing supplies.

"The street could use some youth more than anything else," said Tim LeBon. "The skater community is hungry for it."

LeBon is a former employee of Rascals, a skate shop that operated in Normandy Shopping Center on Route 40. It closed about two years ago when the owner retired.

Since that shop closed, LeBon said skaters have had to leave the county to find good equipment.

"They keep building wonderful concrete skate parks in the county," said LeBon, "but there are no skate shops."

"We want a community hub," said Sarah LeBon.

The couple hopes to attract a younger crowd of artists and skaters to Main Street at their store, which is located at 8018 Main Street, near the CSX train bridge.

Tim said they plan to open on Monday, but won't have an official grand opening until Spring. That's when they'll host an art show with local works that will be on display above the retail goods in their shop.

Since November, Tim LeBon has been working to build the retail portion of the store. On Thursday he said it was ready to be stocked. The day before, he brought his 4-year-old son down from the couple's home on St. Paul Street to the store, on a skateboard.

"He loved it," said LeBon, "He wanted to do it everyday."
