Ellicott City Native Wins Gold at 2013 Dwarf Games
Stephanie Vrettakos was kept from the pool for seven years after a surgery, but after getting back into swimming in May, she was at the top of her game.
An Ellicott City woman overcame a tough injury to win a gold medal, two silver medals and a world championship in the 2013 World Dwarf Games last month.
Stephanie Vrettakos won a gold in the 50 meter breast stroke, a silver in 100 meter breast stroke and a silver medal for her role on the U.S. Women's soccer team. The swimming medals were impressive, considering Vrettakos underwent a back surgery that kept her away from the pool from 2006 until May of this year, according to a High Point University article about her accomplishments.
“I had four swim events that I competed in back to back, so I didn’t even realize I had won gold in the second event until it was all over that night,” says Vrettakos, according to the article. “After my events, I checked my phone to find a lot of messages from my friends and family congratulating me on receiving a gold medal. I was shocked.”
Vrettakos is currently a junior at High Point University, where she is studying business and entrepreneurship. She graduated from Glenelg Country School.
