Blog Post: Do Speeding Cameras Really Promote Safe Driving?

Most of us will find ways to avoid getting caught.

Speed cameras have arrived. But are they really going to encourage drivers to drive safer? People are already talking about how to being caught by the cameras. The county is telling us where the speed cameras will be . Seems like we just might figure out how to avoid the camera catching us speeding. But are we really driving safer? Doubtful!

I've watched motorists pass through the speed camera areas on 695. Yes, some people don't seem to care and speed through with the camera flashing like crazy. Yet there are others, who slow, see if the camera is there and then speed up when they've pasted the camera or know the camera isn't present. I am probably guilty of that myself. So while we may be driving safer in the speed camera areas, we go right back to our speeding ways as soon as the camera is out of sight.

I am assuming the same thing will happen in Columbia. We will know when and where the speed cameras are located. Most of us will drive safely under the watchful eye of the cameras. But watch out, this behavior won't last for long. Just long enough to get away from the camera.
