A Week of Firsts

Broken Ankle, Earthquake, Hurricane ... Need I Say More?

This has been a week of firsts.

  • I broke my first real bone. Fingers and toes don't count. So the breaking of my ankle now puts me in the broken bone club.
  • I had to evacuate my work building for an earthquake.
  • I was the one holding up the evacuation down three flights of stairs because I was hobbling on one good foot and a walkable boot.
  • Made people wonder about being named Jennifer. Me and another co-worker who is named Jennifer both broke our right ankles and are sporting the walkable boot.
  • I let my independent guard down. I allowed people to open doors, carry items for me and fetch things from the kitchen at work that seemed so far away.
  • I purchased a pair of bike gloves. Not to wear when I ride bike, but to prevent blisters from forming on my hands from my crutches.
  • I went shopping the day before a predicted storm to get some essentials. As of 6 p.m., the Target in Columbia had no batteries for flashlights, bottled water (except the flavored kind) and matches. There was a few loaves of bread up front by the sale items. There was plenty of toilet paper, tissues and paper towels.

Here's hoping no more firsts are added to the list this weekend as we get hit by Irene.
