Howard County Arts Council Announces Three New Exhibits

Resident Visual Artists Exhibit 2013 and Beyond the Surface: Anne Bagby, Jack Girard, & Liz Wolf will open May 10; special KINDNESS WORKS exhibit opens June 3

On May 10, 2013, the Howard County Arts Council opens two new exhibits: Resident Visual Artists Exhibit 2013 and Beyond the Surface: Anne Bagby, Jack Girard, & Liz Wolf.

2013 marks the 29th year of the Resident Visual Artists Exhibit at the Howard County Arts Council. The exhibit features recent work created by artists who have studios at HCCA: James Adkins, Joan Bevelaqua, Andres Gomez, Myungsook Ryu Kim, Art Landerman, Diana Marta, Amanda Gordon Miller, Jereme Scott, Leora “Lee” Smith, Alice St. Germain-Gray, Andrei Trach, Jamie Travers, Mary Jo Tydlacka, and David Zuccarini. The artists work in a variety of media including oil and watercolor painting, woodblock printmaking, drawing, and glass bead-making.

Beyond the Surface: Anne Bagby, Jack Girard, & Liz Wolf showcases three artists whose work bridges the divide between representation and abstraction while exploring themes such as family and self-image. Anne Bagby’s colorful, multi-layered works are inspired by the quilt tradition, oriental rugs, and the kaleidoscope, while Jack Girard attributes his affinity for collage to the “fragmented design of [his] days.” Meanwhile, Liz Wolf uses repetitive imagery and symbols such as angels, clowns, and cages as a means to express her “personal feminist perspective” in unique lithographic prints.

Beginning June 3, the Arts Council will also host a special exhibit, KINDNESS WORKS. The American Visionary Art Museum and students from five Howard County National Art Honors Societies collaborated on this civility/anti-bullying project, creating canvas quilts promoting kindness and courage as part of an effort to help end bullying in schools and social circles. Funding for KINDNESS WORKS was provided by the Arts Council and Howard County Government via an OUTREACH HOWARD grant. The exhibit runs through July 2.

A free reception will be held on June 20 from 6–8pm in conjunction with the Columbia Festival of the Arts, with entertainment by All County Improv at 6:30pm and Resident  Artists’ Open Studios from 7–8pm. Resident Visual Artists Exhibit 2013 and Beyond the Surface run through June 23, 2013.
