Join the Friends of Benjamin Banneker and the Baltimore County Department of Recreation and Parks in the celebration of Benjamin Banneker's 281st Birthday on Saturday November 10,2012 from 1:30 pm-3:30 pm at 300 Oella Avenue.

The Milford Mill Acting Ensemble will portray Benjamin’s grandmother Molly Walsh Bannakay, under the direction of Dana Bowles, who will share with the audience the life story of Molly in honor of Banneker's birthday. She taught this young boy to read and write. She told him about his grandfather, a prince who was the son of a king in Africa, and about her days as a dairymaid across the ocean in England. This year's special birthday event will also feature the Milford Mill Junior R.O.T.C. and the Boy's Choir of Powhatan. Alice McGill, author of the book Molley Bannakay, will make a special  guest appearance.

Children’s crafts, birthday cake and refreshments will also be part of this fun and educational celebration. Please join good Friends for this FREE and Family Friendly event!

Why is this guy's birthday celebrated? Honestly, objectively speaking, how many readers "celebrate", much less even know, Thomas Jefferson's or Benjamin Franklin's birthdays?

He's a bit of a local historical legend and people in the area should take some time to learn about him - http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/aia/part2/2p84.html - just my thoughts.
