Watch Ellicott City Whiz on Jeopardy Tonight

Jeff Amoros climbs from It's Academic to collegiate-level national quiz tournament to the pinnacle of trivia game shows.

Jeff Amoros remembers what he studied with his first sets of flashcards: Greek mythology, African capitals and Nobel Peace prize winners.

He used them to nab one of three spots on his high school team competing in the game show It’s Academic.

Over the years, the sets grew into a larger collection of 6,000 to 7,000 flashcards; and a fascination with trivia led Amoros to the ultimate quiz game show stage: Jeopardy.

The episode, filmed in Los Angeles in March, will air Wednesday night.

Amoros, 24, and his parents, along with about 30 to 35 other people, will be watching together at their home in Ellicott City.

Among them will be his younger brothers, who tolerated his flash card obsession when they were younger, quizzing him on long road trips, and a former teammate from his quiz bowl team at the University of Maryland.

His aunt, who lives out of the state, is also hosting a party of her own with about 40 of her friends to watch the show.

“I could go down in horrible flames on Wednesday, and she’s with 40 other people there eating pizza,” said Amoros, a 2009 graduate. He and his girlfriend, Corey Brewer, 24, of Adelphi, who went to the filming, have had to keep details about the show a secret since March.

In the meantime, he’s been working at 2tor, Inc., which provides technical and post-enrollment support to higher education institutes establishing online degree programs. And he’s been feeding his trivia appetite with pub trivia nights and Trivial Pursuit.

Brewer, his girlfriend since their freshman year at the University of Maryland, has supported Amoros' inquisitiveness.

“You would not believe how many flash cards I’ve gone through with him … I’ve played more Trivial Pursuit in the last six years than I have my entire life,” she said.

“He loves learning things,” she added.

But Amoros said it’s not smarts that’s made him a trivia master. It’s a good memory and constant reading and quizzing. Then there’s the combination of a journalism degree with a history minor that he earned at UMd.

“[That’s] deadly in terms of Jeopardy,” he said.

Amoros wouldn't give any clues as to just how deadly that combination was, and said he could potentially lose any winnings if he did.  The only early glimpse into what happens appears as apreview on the Jeopardy website.

"You went boogie boarding, and you got hypothermia?" 27-year Jeopardy host Alex Trebek asked Amoros during the interview segment. "How did they warm you up?"

"Lobster bisque," Amoros answered.
