Storm Blows Through, Knocks Out Power

A brief storm with heavy winds left some Howard County residents in the dark.

Roads were closed and the lights were off in some areas of Howard County Thursday night after a brief, but blustry storm.

According to data from the Old Line Weather Station, winds gusts reached about 30 mph at times and just about a tenth of an inch of rain hit the ground.

At about 11:45 p.m., the rain had stopped, winds had calmed and the power was off for about 940 BGE customers in Howard County; BGE had by that time restored power to more than 1,800 additional customers who had lost power during the storm.

On Facebook, Danielle Scarbrough said a downed wire led to the closure of Frederick Road near the intersection with MD Route 97 in Lisbon. "There is a big truck, a sign 'road closed,'" she posted, and a man standing in the road telling people they couldn't pass.

Just after 10 p.m., Joseph F. D'Alonzo said Worthington Woods was in the dark and Kimberly Shock Wilder said power was out on both sides of Roundhill Road and on Elberta and Clearwater Drives. "We lost power at 9:40," she wrote, "before the storm really started."

According to the National Weather Service, we've got more muggy weather coming today. Temperatures will reach the mid-90s, but with humidity levels fluctuating between 50 and 80 percent, temperatures will feel closer to 100 degrees.
