Speed Cameras May be Coming to Howard County

County officials plan to announce legislation to allow speed cameras in Howard County.

How do you feel about cameras keeping tabs on your speed?

Local municipalities have the authority to install speed cameras in school zones and around the county, and Howard County officials will announce a plan to propose legislation that would allow them to do just that.

County Executive Ken Ulman, Police Chief William McMahon, County Chairman Calvin Ball and acting School Superintendent Mamie Perkins are meeting at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Ilchester Elementary School to announce the legislation after “resident concerns and a thorough, year-long study conducted by the county’s police department,” according to a statement released Monday by the Howard County Police Department.

The announcement will come a few weeks after Baltimore County voted 5–2 to do away with a countywide cap of 15 and allow an unlimited number of cameras to be installed in school zones. According to the Baltimore Sun, decisions to install speed cameras have prompted lawsuits in cities and towns across the country.
