Snow and Sleet May be Headed Our Way

Precipitation is on the way, the question is, "what kind?"

We haven't yet seen a significant snow storm in Maryland this year, but it doesn't take much to cause traffic delays, school disruptions and other weather-related inconveniences.

The National Weather Service has issued a winter weather advisory, calling for sleet and freezing rain tonight and tomorrow morning.

Sleet is precipitation that starts off as snow, melts as it falls toward the ground, then re-freezes, reaching us as icy pellets. Freezing rain starts off as snow, melts by the time it gets to the ground, but the ground is frozen, causing the rain to freeze on impact. This type of precipitation causes especially dangerous road conditions.
