More Rain, More Wind and Maybe More Flooding

A severe thunderstorm watch is in effect for Howard County.

The National Weather Service has issued severe thunderstorm watch for Howard County, in effect until 6 p.m.

What's the difference between a thunderstorm and a severe thunderstorm? The latter brings with it not just thunder, lightning and rain, but a tornado, winds of at least 58 mph and or hail at least 3/4 of an inch in diameter.

NWS issues a severe thunderstorm watch when "conditions are favorable for the development of severe thunderstorms in and close to the watch area." So it hasn't developed yet, but the conditions are there and rain is predicted to start before 9 p.m.

According to the forecast, damaging winds are a prime concern this evening, but hail is not as likely because of the warm air.

On top of the threat of tornadoes, there is also the possibility that any heavy rain could lead to flooding. According to the NWS forecast discussion, "won't post a flood watch yet. But ... it is a concern."
