Man who Robs Ellicott City Bank Sentenced to 12 Years in Federal Prison

The 31-year-old robbed banks around Maryland and in Delaware, Georgia and North Carolina.

A Maryland man was sentenced to more than a decade in federal prison for robbing a bank in Ellicott City, along with other banks in Maryland, Georgia, Delaware and North Carolina, according to a statement from the U.S. Department of Justice.

Zachary Scott Shanaberger, 31, of Carroll County, was also ordered to pay $22,584.50 in restitution, according to a statement released by the DOJ.

According to his plea agreement, Shananberger stole the following amounts from banks in Maryland:

  • $1,850 from the Howard Bank on Baltimore National Pike in Ellicott City on March 27
  • $2,240 from the BB&T Bank on Main Street in Westminster on March 15
  • $479 from the M&T Bank on Spectrum Drive in Frederick on March 25
  • $2,790 from the Bank Annapolis on West McKinsey Road in Severna Park on March 6

In each case, according to the DOJ statement, Shanaberger gave a note to the teller that indicated he had a gun, and demanded money. 

Federal prosecutors also said Shanaberger stole more than $15,200 from banks in Georgia, North Carolina and Delaware between Jan. 28 and Feb. 26, 2010.

He was sentenced to 151 months in prison, to be followed by three years of supervised release, according to the DOJ.
