Last Chance: Tax Time

It’s tax time.

Today is the last day to file taxes, if you haven’t already filed for an extension (you can do so here).

This year’s deadline is two days later than the usual April 15 because this year, April 15 fell on a Sunday and April 16 was Emancipation Day in Washington, DC. Holidays in the District affect tax schedules just as federal holidays do.

That may be interesting, but if you still need to file, learning the nuances of the tax laws probably aren't your top priority.

Fear not, “At the IRS, we’re working hard to make the process of filing your taxes as quick and easy as possible,” IRS Commissioner Doug Shulman said in a statement.

“Providing quality service is one of our top priorities. It not only reduces the burden on taxpayers, but also helps in filing an accurate return right from the start.”

One way that the IRS suggests is easy is to file online at the IRS website where you can also file for an extension until Oct. 15.

About 80 percent of all taxpayers—112 million people— file electronically.

And because so many people file online, the United States Postal Service has cut back on the number of post offices that stay open late to accept those last-minute envelopes, according to a Huffington Post report.

USPS officials say that keeping post offices open for a relatively small number of taxpayers is "obsolete and too expensive," the Huffington Post reports.

The IRS also provides an online tool shed of sorts to help with problems, questions and finding the right forms.

Taxes or an extension, the deadline is fast approaching: midnight tonight.
