First Spring Weekend Forecast? Snow.

No, those aren't Cherry Blossom petals.

“Spring snow,” it almost sounds nice.  Like a spring shower, but fluffier.

The State Highway Authority is taking the idea of a possible snow shower seriously. SHA maintenance crews will be at the ready at about midnight to take care of snow, which is forecast to begin at around 2 a.m.

Earlier today, the interstates were pre-treated.

"SHA constantly monitors weather conditions posing a threat to the State, and remains at the ready to keep Maryland roads open and safe – it makes no difference if it’s January or March,” SHA Administrator Neil J. Pedersen said in a statement.

“We’re on guard and ready."

The National Weather Service is forecasting, not just snow, but accumulating snow. The precipitation is expected to begin early Sunday morning and continue through early afternoon. NWS has issued a winter weather advisory for the area.

“Just as we treat every snow storm seriously, we ask Maryland motorists to do the same,” Pedersen said.  “Be prepared for icy conditions especially on the bridges, ramps and overpasses. Even a very small patch of ice can cause a hazard for drivers."

SHA warned that roads may be wet and slick, even if there is little or no accumulation, and that, just like the signs say, bridges freeze before the roads. Allow extra time for travel, SHA suggests, and keep a safe distance.
