Fireworks and Festivities in and Around Howard County

Here are a few spots to check out the fireworks.

Kaboom!

It's almost fireworks time in Howard County.

The show begins Monday at 9:30 p.m. at the Columbia Lakefront. Bring blankets and chairs, but the county is asking people not to bring strollers or pets.

There is a slight chance of rain -- 20 percent, according to the National Weather service. In the rain does show up, the fireworks will go on tomorrow.

There will be festivals filled with music and other entertainment leading up to the fireworks. In Baltimore, the festivities start at noon; in Columbia, at 5 p.m.; and in Catonsville, at 6:30 p.m.

And if, like my neighbors, you decide to light your own, legal, fireworks, here are a few safety tips from Howard County Fire and Rescue:

  • Never allow young children to play with or ignite fireworks.
  • Adults should always supervise fireworks activities.
  • Allow a safe distance when lighting the fuse of a fireworks device.
  • Never try to re-light fireworks that have not fully functioned.
  • Never point or throw fireworks at another person.
  • Keep a bucket of water or a garden hose handy in case of fire.
  • Never carry fireworks in a pocket or shoot them off in metal or glass containers.
  • After fireworks fully complete their functioning, douse the spent device with plenty of water from a bucket or hose before discarding to prevent a trash fire.
