The Target retail crime investigators in Ellicott City shut down a crime ring responsible for stealing $20 million of merchandise between 14 people. Investigators in the Long Gate shopping center review video surveillance logs and pour over inventory data. But, the Bellingham Herald reports, there’s still a long way to go. Thieves in the United States get away with about $15 to $30 billion a year.

Sweet Bakery left Ellicott City last year, but, according to the Baltimore Sun’s Dining Out blog, it’s reopening tomorrow in Baltimore’s Mt. Vernon neighborhood. The specialty bakery will open its doors tomorrow at 10 a.m. with a ribbon cutting. The ribbon will be made of … cake.

Michael Palulis brings Orioles fans to their feet. But the Ellicott City native isn’t a baseball player. ABC 2 News reports Palulis has been on the grounds-keeping crew for eight seasons and worked more than 600 games. And his pitching-change ritual drives the fans wild. Hotel rates may be rising after the General Assembly approved legislation to raise the hotel tax. The Columbia Flier reports that it was one of the biggest issues that the delegation worked on. In January, a handful of at a public hearing in front of the Howard County Delegation.
