4 Things to Know about Ellicott City Today

Head into the day a little more informed.

Temperatures are set to hit 95 degrees today according to the National Weather Service, and will feel more like 101 degrees with the heat index—a measure of how hot it feels when humidity is taken into account. There is no rain in the forecast until Wednesday, when there's a 30 percent chance of thunderstorms.

A heat alert issued by Howard County's health officer Peter Beilenson is in effect until 8 p.m. today as temperatures are expected to remain high, and feel even higher with the heat index. Beilenson's tips to stay safe:

  • NEVER leave children or pets unattended in a parked car or other hot environment.
  • Check on elderly friends, family and neighbors who live alone.
  • If possible, stay out of the sun between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m.
  • Increase your fluid intake; drink non-alcoholic and caffeine-free liquids.
  • Be aware of the warning signs of heat-related illness, such as light-headedness, mild nausea or confusion, sleepiness or profuse sweating.

The Howard County Board of Education is meeting at 9 a.m. to adopt the FY2010 Operating and Capital Budgets and the FY 2013- 2017 Capital Improvement Program. The meeting will be at the Board Room.
