Serafino's Closes, Posts Sign Saying it Will Re-Open in Summer

Sign says restaurant will be under new management.

Serafino’s the Italian restaurant off of Route 40 on Plumtree Drive has closed and a sign posted outside on Tuesday says the restaurant is undergoing renovations and will re-open in the summer under new management.

A message left at the home of the restaurant’s owner, Joseph Mannarelli, was not returned on Tuesday.

Mannarelli currently owes over $700,000 in unpaid taxes, interest and penalties from a 2012 judgment that has yet to be satisfied, according to court records.

Eric King, the owner of the Shanty Grille who also owns the building in which Serafino’s operated, said he had discussed the closing with Mannarelli. He said Mannarelli is contemplating whether to change the concept or possibly sell the restaurant.

“It’s not like we shut him down or anything,” said King, who added that the restaurant made the decision to close on Sunday.

Joseph Mannarelli made headlines in 2006 when he reportedly tackled a bank robbery suspect who was fleeing past Serafino’s in June of 2006 after robbing a nearby bank, according to a Baltimore Sun report.

Serafino’s is known for its traditional Italian food and sports bar.
