Goodbye Yates Market

After 127 years, Yates Market is closing.

Yates Market has stood on the corner of Main and Hamilton Streets for more than 125 years, but likely won’t make 130.

“It was a big decision,” said owner Betty Jacobs, as she brought merchandise out to the sidewalk on Tuesday morning.

Jacobs has owned the store for 33 years, but it has been in her family since it opened in 1885. Her sister-in-law owns the building.

These connections made the decision tough. “Having been a family business for so long, you feel guilty,” she said. But she wants to spend more time with her husband.

“This is my life,” she said with a chuckle. “I want to retire.”

Jacobs has not set a date for the official closing. “I don’t want to drive myself crazy with deadlines,” she said. “I just want to enjoy it.”

Until it stops being fun, everything in the store–and on the sidewalk–is 50 percent off.
