Empty in Ellicott City: Route 40 Lot

What would you like to see along this stretch of Route 40?

The former site of 84 Lumber sits empty -- a big, open space begging for a retailer to swoop in.

When , readers had : Trader Joe's; Whole Foods; an indoor farmer's market; T.J. Maxx; an ice rink; and many more.

(But not a fast food restaurant).

If you had your way, what business would you like to see set up shop at 10164 Baltimore National Pike?

My hope is that the historic Forest Diner, locate just down Rt. 40, will relocate to the old 84 Lumber site. The diner has been there since 1948, long before old Enchanted Forest castle across the street was around. I’ve been eating there on occasion since 1951, when I was a child, and my parents moved into a new house only 5 miles away. Sadly, the property containing the diner and the now closed Forest Motel, has been sold, and at some point in the future both will be torn down to make way for the construction of a business center of some kind. The old Silk City diner car was made by the Patterson Vehicle Company, in Patterson, NJ sometime in the late 1930’s or early 1940’s. The current restaurant was later built around the old diner car. Forest Diner is a local landmark, and the Silk City diner car itself could possibly be classified as a historic landmark and preserved. The 84 Lumber site seems perfect for the preservation part, and relocation would allow the Forest Diner to continue on as a business serving good food.

Anyone familiar with this location knows it would not be suitable for a business with heavy in/out auto traffic, especially during evening rush hour when it is likely to be most busy.

Is it true that Kohl's is going in where Sear's Grand is closing?

Move the Giant to the old Sears location. Its a much bigger store than they currently have.

Oh, that would be nice -- a great big new grocery store. But then ... what do we do with the old Giant storefront?

Last time I looked, there is still a for sale/lease sign on the empty 84 Lumber lot. There is a multiple use shopping/living center going in down the road on Rt 40 beside the Double T diner...where the Forest Diner and Forest Motel used to be.

I think we know what's coming here, now ... a Sonic. More info soon. Hopefully today.
