Americana Served Up Big

Dining at Double T Diner is an experience in sights and other senses.

Olympian Michael Phelps has talked about the monstrous meals he eats at Double T Diner to fuel his miles of laps and appease his voracious appetite. There's no guarantee, of course, that he will be sighted at this location, but the Ellicott City Double T Diner is worth a visit for a late night meal or weekend breakfast with the family.  There are several locations in Maryland that adhere to the same menu of American diner-style cooking.

While some of the locations are open 24 hours, this one has regular hours but serves up appetizing meals later than most of the restaurants on Route 40.

From the time you drive your car into the parking lot to your entry into the diner, you are swept up in nostalgia for a time when diners were flashy on the outside and big and inviting inside.  The neon and inner decor are reminiscent of the 1950s.  I love taking friends and family visiting from out of the country to Double T Diner because this place is such a vibrant example of Americana.

Once seated, you're handed a menu the size of a large book.  Unless you want to spend a long time browsing, go in with a plan of breakfast food or a square meal. This will narrow down the choices to a couple of pages or so.

I think their breakfast fare is always solid and delicious as a meal anytime of the day or even for dessert after some crab cakes or pasta.  I adore their banana pancakes with the bananas in the batter and not on the side.  This pancake with a bit of whipped cream and powdered sugar is perfect for Sunday brunch. Any of the malted waffles are also excellent. Top those with two scoops of ice cream, and you have a special dessert.

For lunch or dinner, I tend to gravitate toward pasta.  It arrives in these large thick plates with heaping mounds of noodles and meat.   The Chicken Marsala has a wonderful flavor with just the perfect blend of wine, butter and garlic along with generous portions of chicken and sauce to sop up with bread. Their Shrimp and Scallop Scampi is also a meal and a half of flavor as well as portion size.  This dish is perfect for anyone who loves garlic and seafood forming a blissful union. My son loves the Chicken Tenders and often orders it with a side of spaghetti.

If you are going for dessert, I would suggest the cheesecake over the cakes.  You will be wowed by the size of the desserts, so you might want to share. The Marble Cheesecake is my favorite because it is the best of cheesecake and chocolate.

Double T is the right place to accommodate a group of friends or family who like to eat different types of food at one table and have left overs for the next day.
