Overturned Truck Spills Fuel, Closes Route 32

Howard County fire and rescue crews spent hours at the scene of an overturned truck that spilled fuel onto Maryland Route 32, according to a spokesperson.

Crews responded to Route 32 westbound, just prior to Interstate 95 in Savage just after 1:30 p.m., according to Howard County Department of Fire and Rescue Services spokesperson Jackie Cutler. 

When they arrived, crews found a tractor-trailer had overturned, spilling fuel into the roads, Cutler said. HCDFRS is working with the State Highway Administration and the Maryland Department of Environment to clean the road.

According to Howard County Police spokesperson Sherry Llewellyn, a tractor without an attached trailer rear-ended the tractor-trailer, causing the tractor-trailer to overturn. 

An ambulance took one person to University of Maryland Shock Trauma with non life-threatening injuries, according to Llewellyn. 

Llewellyn said police have not yet determined who was at fault.  

As of about 3:20 p.m. Tuesday, Route 32 westbound was still closed at I-95 for clean-up and the investigation. 

The road re-opened just after 4:20 p.m., according to Llewellyn.
