A Celebration of Diversity, Heritage and Puccini: Patch Features the Best in Local Arts

Covering all things artsy on stage, at schools and in books, Patch was everywhere you wanted to be, reporting arts events in the past week.

The “M” in Maryland may as well stand for “multicultural” as various parts of the community gather to learn about their differences through traditional ethnic clothes, dance, performance and cuisine. So indulge your inner aficionado with the following Week in Regional Arts.


After their play was selected out of the more than 350 submitted to be presented at Center Stage’s annual Young Playwrights Festival, students at Maryland School for the Deaf are busy rehearsing Shine, a second play they wrote that they hope will be selected for performance on Baltimore's Center Stage. More than 100 student performers entertained an overcapacity crowd in a seamless show of cultural exchange Friday at McDonogh School’s 2011 “Multicultural Night.” At the highly anticipated event, students presented 25 different musical and dance acts that represented their diverse cultural heritages and origins. While simultaneously undergoing vigorous chemotherapy treatments, Reisterstown resident Gerry Kleiman wrote a book about a futuristic world in which cats can talk. Now cancer-free, Kleiman has begun working on his second novel. Read more about this inspirational achievement on Reisterstown Patch.


Presenting a unique version of the critically acclaimed RENT, local actors and musicians will perform the musical on stage at Carroll Community College’s Scott Center.
