Howard County was under numerous weather alerts Wednesday, continuing through Thursday morning.
A flood warning was in effect until 9 a.m. Thursday for Howard, Baltimore, Anne Arundel, Montgomery and Prince George's counties, according to the National Weather Service.
At 5:45 a.m. Thursday, the weather service said moderate flooding had been reported at the Patapsco River in Elkridge and the Patuxent River in Laurel with minor flooding at the Little Patuxent in Savage.

During Wednesday's rainstorm, there was a rapid rise in water around low-lying areas, so numerous roads were closed, and Ellicott City's bridge over the Tiber River was closed before 4 p.m., County Executive Ken Ulman said.

By 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Columbia had received 6.25 inches of rain and an hour later, Highland had 7.32 inches, according to unofficial reports from the National Weather Service.
For those driving, transportation and emergency officials advise to watch for standing water and not to travel through it.
The State Highway Administration offers these tips:
- Turn around if you see standing water; don't drown.
- Use headlights if windshield wipers are on—it's the law.
- Watch for animals, like deer, crossing roads as they flee flooded areas.
- Treat intersections where signals are out as a four-way stop—it's the law.
- Do not move branches tangled in electrical wires or cable from travel lanes.
- Allow for extra braking distance.
