ASA Premier Girls Soccer Team Impresses at FC Delco Cup

The ASA Premier Girls U14 Soccer Team traveled to Lancaster PA over the Memorial Day weekend and after posting an impressive 3-0-1 record in preliminary rounds, lost a hard fought championship game to the #5 ranked team in the country, LMVSC Patriots. The 2nd place finish in the tournament propels the ASA Premier 99 team to the top of the Maryland state rankings and into the top 50 in the national rankings. 

The FC Delco Cup tournament is ranked as one of the top 10 soccer tournaments in the nation with over 700 teams playing, including teams from all 4 U.S. soccer regions, as well as international teams.

 On day one of the tournament, the ASA Premier team faced off against tough teams from New Jersey and New York East. ASA Premier’s fierce defense along with stellar goal keeper play resulted in the team giving up zero goals and the team posted a 0-0 tie and 1-0 win respectively in the opening games. The defensive domination kept the team in the hunt moving into day 2.

Day 2 opened with ASA Premier needing a win to advance to the playoff round, and the team delivered in dramatic fashion by beating the Rhode Island State Champion team by a score of 1-0 which sent the ASA Premier team into the playoffs. Later on day 2, the ASA Premier team took the field in the semi-final game against a resilient team from Ohio and delivered a dramatic 4-3 win in overtime which sent them to the championship game against LMVSC.

Day 3 started with the ASA Premier team up at 5:00 a.m. to travel across the state for the championship game at the United Sports Training Center in Dowingtown PA. ASA Premier played hard and fought to the end but ultimately lost to the #5 team in the country by a score of 2-1.

ASA Premier Head Coach Bob Thomas said “All 18 players contributed this weekend, and the team continues to get better and move forward every day …we played great soccer this weekend, but came up a bit short against a talented opponent….I expect a different result in next year’s tournament.”

Tournament goals were scored by Harleigh White, Calle Garneau, Asiah Manu, and Tayah Rendina while Goal Keeper Maddie Wheeler delivered 3 shutout games between the pipes.
