Wine in the Woods takes place Saturday and Sunday at Symphony Woods Park in Columbia.
Howard County's annual celebration of Maryland wine takes place this weekend. This year's event will include about 1,500 volunteers from wineries and the community, and an expected attendance of 25,000 people, according to Anna Hunter, the marketing director for Howard County Recreation and Parks. One of the new additions to this year's event is a cell phone app—available on both Droids and iPhones—that includes a map that shows where food vendors, artisans and wineries are located, as well as a schedule for the live music acts. Patch photographed some of the best examples of student artwork on display at the Columbia Mall.
The spring art exhibition featuring local student artists opened at the Mall in Columbia Wednesday night. Following a tradition began last year, Patch went out and photographed some of the more eye-popping student artwork for the gallery above. The exhibit features work from all the Howard County Schools spread over two levels inside the mall. This is the 41st year the mall has hosted the student art exhibit. From The Mall in Columbia: Each year, teachers chose approximately 30-40 students from their school to represent a cross-section of the arts curriculum, as well as all levels of artistic ability. Howard County's own Scott Suko has been toppling dominoes for decades. He'll share the fun, the beauty and the science with students at St. Louis School's family STEM night.
Scott Suko doesn’t see domino toppling as a sport. Then again, he said, it’s not a game. Painstakingly setting up hundreds, thousands or even hundreds of thousands of dominoes in precise, complex patterns, and then, with one swift movement, setting off a chain reaction that will result in all of the dominoes eventually falling over—“It’s more of an art form,” the Howard County resident said. He’ll be demonstrating the art of toppling Tuesday night at St. Louis School for the school’s first family STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) night. Toppling is “entertaining to watch and beautiful," Suko said, "but it takes a lot of math and physics to get this to happen.” The “entertaining” part keeps the kids' (and adults') …
