Time to Move On To Decorating for the Next Holiday
Recycle your Christmas trees! Chinese New Year is right around the corner. And so is Martin Luther King, Jr. Day…and Ben Franklin’s Birthday…and Save the Eagles Day…
Is Christmas really over? Has 2011 left us forever? It’s hard to believe, but it’s time to start taking down your Christmas trees if you have them, and thinking about hanging up the pink and red hearts.
Or your 100th Day of School decorations.
Or your groundhog décor.
Or whatever exciting holiday is next on your calendar.
And to help you get going, the Howard County Merry Mulch program is in full swing again.
From now through January 20th you can recycle your trees at participating garden centers, the landfill or parks. Some residents an even recycle theirs curbside. If you have curbside yard trim collection, just place your Christmas tree out on your regular curbside recycling day.
Just remember to make sure all decorations and lights are off!
The Merry Mulch program is free and all Howard Country residents may participate. Since 1993, this Christmas tree recycling program has, according to the County, kept thousands of trees out of the landfill, helping to save money and the environment.
All collected trees are delivered to a local compost facility and will be recycled into both compost and mulch.
Participating locations are as follows:
Clarksville: Kendall Hardware at 12260 Route 108 & River Hill Garden Center at 12165 Route 108
Columbia: Cedar Lane Park at 5081 Cedar Lane & Grandfather's Garden Center at 5320 Phelps Luck Drive
Elkridge: Rockburn Park at 5400 Landing Road
Ellicott City: Small Circuit Court parking lot on upper Court House Drive (just past Ellicott Mills Drive, on the right)
Highland: Schooley Mill Park at 12975 Hall Shop Road
Marriottsville: Alpha Ridge Landfill Wood Waste Area at 2350 Marriottsville Road
Savage: Savage Park at 8400 Fair Street
Woodbine: Western Regional Park at 14800 Carrs Mill Road
Look for the little Merry Mulch signs!
When the sites listed above have stopped accepting Christmas trees and curbside yard trim collection is no longer offered (after Jan. 20), you can still bring your Christmas tree to the Alpha Ridge Landfill Wood Waste Area, which is open Monday through Saturday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Also note that artificial Christmas trees and wreaths can always be recycled in the scrap metal area at the Alpha Ridge Landfill Residents’ Convenience Area, even if you don’t get to taking them down until May.
