Police: Injured Teen Driver May Have Failed to Stop at Stop Sign

Jeffrey Conner Sinclair is still in critical condition.

Police say a teenage driver who is in critical condition from injuries sustained in a collision near Mt. Hebron High School Thursday may have failed to stop at a stop sign before driving out in front of a Mack truck.

At about 2:20 p.m. on Thursday, police say Jeffrey Conner Sinclair, 18, was driving a Honda Civic out of a Mt. Hebron High School parking lot when he pulled out onto Route 99. Four teenagers were in the car with him, according to police.

According to the preliminary report, police say Sinclair may have failed to stop at the stop sign exiting the school parking lot and did not yield to the right of way of the tree removal service truck, which was traveling westbound on Route 99.

The driver of the truck, a 43-year-old Sykesville man, was not injured.

Sinclair remained in critical condition as of about 2:30 p.m. Friday, according to police. The other teenagers in the car with him were taken to Howard County General Hospital Thursday and released. They are: Justyn Richard Alexander, 17, front seat; Michael Dennis Brooks, 15; Elisha Shannon Brown, 17; and Urek Ali Bradshaw, 16, all male Howard County students.

Investigators say that it does not appear that the truck was speeding.

Failing to stop at stop sign, trying to "beat" oncoming traffic, speeding through and out of the parking lot happens every day at all of our high schools. It is a most terrifying sight and I am surprised more accidents don't happen. My prayers for this young man and his family and friends.

High school parking lots are scary places at dismissal time. I have chosen to sit in my car for a couple of minutes rather than compete with that.

Regardless of the cause, my prayers and sympathies go out to this family and all his friends.

These types of tragedies are so horrible and to have it all be in the public eye, I think, makes it even more difficult.

I second that. They speed, talk on cell phones and break driving laws all the time. You take your life in your hands when you get behind the wheel. We need to have stricter laws regarding driving.

Two of my children are recent graduates from Mt Hebron. Leaving the parking lot at that location is extremely difficult. Visibility is very limited in one direction and traffic is heavy most of the day. That accident could have happened to any one of our children. My prayers are with Jeff's family and the Mt Hebron community.

Could have happened to anybody, right? Five testosterone fueled teenage boys in a car vs. a slow and highly visible tree removal truck. Parents are so delusional as to the mistakes their precious angels are capable of making.

Right! Cause teens are the ONLY ones making stupid choices on the road. Teens are the only ones talking on cell phones. Teens are the only ones driving aggressively.

NOT

Do they make mistakes. Yes. But they aren't alone. Others make driving mistakes. Teens just aren't always as judgmental about the general population.

Teens, especially teen boys, have insurance rates that speak for themselves. Not going to argue the obvious with you. I was being sarcastic when I said that we must ban them, but they are dangers on the road.

I drive a fuel truck for a living & believe me, drivers in a hurry, especially kids getting out of a full day of school, constantly pull out in front of trucks because they don't have the patience to get behind a slower moving vehicle. What they don't realize is that we cannot stop our trucks on a dime like a car can no matter how slow we're moving. Maybe they should teach more science in schools so people will learn the basics atleast

Agreed they CAN be dangerous on the road. And their insurance rates are higher, but it isn't just teenage BOYS. And it isn't just teenagers.

(HR, sorry, I didn't recognize that you had employed the sarcasm font. ;) )

Maybe school exits should all be traffic light driven with no right on red allowed?

Again, prayers for all involved in this.

Instead of attacking my claims using logic and reason, you simply tell me I'm ignorant. Well, at least that approach is less work for you, I guess.
