Original article:
Howard County police believe three men are dead inside of a car after it collided with a tractor-trailer in Elkridge Thursday morning.
According to police spokesperson Sherry Llewellyn, a Chevy Impala was headed northbound on US Route 1 near Meadowridge Road at about 6 a.m. Thursday at what a preliminary report suggests was a “high rate of speed."
At the same time, a tractor-trailer was driving southbound on Route 1, making a left turn, and the Impala drove into it on the 7500 block of Washington Blvd., according to a preliminary report. Police say the truck driver, a 58-year-old man, was not injured but they believe three men, who have not yet been identified, are dead inside of the Impala.
As of 8:30 a.m., Route 1 was closed in both directions near the scene of the collision.

Tragic and senseless. With all the tractor trailers around the area it was bound to happen. My thoughts and prayers with all including the truck driver, who I am sure just devasted too.

Almost every morning I see cars speeding northbound on Route 1 between Kit Kat Road and Meadowridge Road even though there are dips and rises in the road that make the drivers blind to traffic entering Route 1. Most of the time, drivers are lucky and there are no trucks making left turns in one of those blind spots. The three guys in the Impala have probably gotten away with it before, but their luck finally ran out.
If that stretch of Route 1 could be leveled to get rid of the blind spots, then hundreds of accidents and near-misses could be or would have been prevented. The speed limit on that stretch of Route 1 is 50 MPH, which means that a lot of traffic is going 55 to 60 mph, while many cautious drivers are going at only 40 to 45 mph. That mix of varying speeds, blind spots, and heavy truck traffic make for a "cocktail" of danger. .

Why would anyone blame the presence of tractor trailers? The car was speeding, probably significantly. The only thing senseless here is the rate of speed that this idiot was evidently driving at.

@Dahlen - I think it came out wrong or you misunderstood my statement. Let me clarify. I meant that in an area with so much tractor trailer traffic in the area, you would think people would be more aware with their speed, etc.

Absolutely, I agree that they should. Unfortunately, there are far too many that drive like maniacs along Route 1. I am just glad that this idiot didn't kill or injure any innocents.

the other 'hot bed area' there is the ramp coming from Rt 100 on to Rt 1. I've had countless close calls because people are leaving the highway at top speed and not looking left to see if there is a car already in the right lane on Rt 1.

That ramp should be marked a "No Merge Area" and a Stop Sign at the end.

Why put up a stop sign? Why not fix the ramp so there's a proper merge area? Why does this state take so many shortcuts - that's a poor design from the start.

Need more police presence so the rate of speed would be controlled, especially during rush hour. Unfortunately, that is when we see the least police presence in both Howard and Baltimore Counties.

One of the main reasons I see for accidents are because of idiot drivers in the passing lane. Many people in MD and especially VA drivers will plunk themselves in the passing lane and not move. This forces drivers to pass on the left where other cars are trying to merge onto the road. If the police simply enforced three simple things: Drive right, pass left. Use your darn signals (before you turn), and cell phone use. There is absolutely no excuse whatsoever to use a cell phone nowadays with every phone having blue tooth and even if not, but a simple head piece for $9.95. The life it will save may be your own. Speed in not the usual problem. It is stupidity and laziness that kills the majority of the time.

Yes, speed appears to be the major contributing factor this time. But I travel that stretch of 1 near the flea market almost every morning around 6:30. It's common for semi drivers, too impatient to wait their turn, to turn across lanes without stopping, forcing one or both lanes to an abrupt halt. It's been that way for years and the police need to arrest a few of them to calm things down.
