One Dead in Motorcycle Collision

The driver of the motorcycle is dead after crashing into a signpost in Marriottsville.

One man is dead after driving his motorcycle off the road and into a signpost in Howard County, according to police.

Forty-five-year-old Gary Alan Lynch of Woodbine was driving his Honda CRB 900 motorcycle westbound on Maryland Route 99 in Marriottsville Sunday evening near Alpha Ridge Park, according to a statement released by Cpl. Christopher Krieger.

According to Krieger, Lynch drove off the road at about 6:16 p.m. and struck a signpost. Lynch was taken to Howard County General Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival, according to Krieger.

The preliminary police investigation has determined “speed” and “failure to drive within a single lane” as the primary causes of the collision.

This article has been edited to correct Krieger's name in the third paragraph.

Why a motorcyclist would ever drive over 35 or 40 mph is a mystery to me. That seems fast enough for the 'thrill-seeking'. Even going 40, there are so many ways an accident can happen that would kill.......pothole in the road, slippery curve, crash with animal, car that doesn't see you.......you add them up and scratch your head why anyone would ever ride one.

Why don't you stay inside your house and worry about your toaster getting too hot and starting a fire that burns your house down.
There are risks involved with everyhing you do every second of the day. Get out and enjoy life and quit worrying about WHAT could happen.
Obviously you have never riden a bike before and you sound like the person in the left lane going 45 MPH slowing down traffic and creating a jam

Being the speed limit is 65 in a lot of places you have no choice but to drive over 35 , and by your post you seemed to have never been on a motorcycle , it gets me when people post on subjects they have no clue about

Perhaps he was ran off the road by a car passing. If not at least it was his fault, if a car was involved, the biker would be dead and the caged driver would walk free.
Motorcyclists are treated like their accident/injuries are because they were riding a bike. I don't think drivers of cars get charged with anything criminal when kill bikers

Anyone who knows where that accident occurred knows that is not a 65mph zone. In addition, it is a notorious area for people to drive fast and lose control. God bless him and his wife. He was a lovely person.

Crash studies show that running off the road, usually in a curve, accounts for about 37%* of of total motorcycle fatalities. This is the primay situation in which motorcyclists have single vehicle crashes.
Bottom line is that we (motorcycle riders) all too often take curves too fast.
