Heat, Humidity May Cause Dangerous Conditions
Temperatures are expected to hit the mid-90s today.
It’s going to be a scorcher.
The National Weather Service has issued a heat advisory until 8 p.m. today. Temperatures are expected to reach the mid- to upper-90s, but the heat index – a measure of heat and humidity – will climb as high as 105 degrees.
With that in mind, the Howard County Health Officer released a statement reminding residents that they should try to stay away from the sun, particularly between the hours of 10 a.m. and 3 p.m.
If you need to cool down tomorrow, visit one of the Howard County Senior Centers, open today from 9 a.m. – 4 p.m. or a Howard County Library branch, open from 10 a.m. - 9 p.m.
Be on the lookout for signs of heat stroke, including extreme weakness, muscle cramps, nausea, headache, vomiting and/or fainting, according to the health officer.
Some medical conditions are also exacerbated by extreme heat.
The health officer and the National Weather Service offer these tips to keep safe in the heat:
- Drink plenty of water, avoid alcohol and caffeine
- Limit strenuous activity to the early morning or late evening
- Wear light, loose-fitting clothes and hats
- Wear sunscreen
- Stay out of the sun between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m.
- Check on elderly friends, family and neighbors
- Never leave children or pets unattended in cars or any other hot environment
