Have a Gun? Police Will Give You $100 For It
Howard County police will hold a gun buyback program on March 16.
Howard County police are offering residents $100 per gun if they bring it to the Dorsey Building in Columbia on March 16.
Guns dropped off at the event will be destroyed and funds to pay for them will come from money seized in drug investigations, according to police.
“This is truly about safety,” said Police Chief William J. McMahon, in a statement. “If you have a gun in your home that you no longer want, we will help you eliminate the possibility that it could be used in a way you never intended.”
Those participating in the event will remain anonymous, and police said they will not ask for identification at the event. Police will buy any complete firearm, but not gun parts or pellet/BB guns.
Residents who bring a gun to the event have been asked to keep the gun, unloaded and locked, inside their trunk and a police officer will take it out while the gun’s owner remains in his or her vehicle.
Individuals may turn in up to three firearms, according to police.
In addition, those who attend the event will receive a free gun lock, even if they don’t turn in a weapon, said police.
If police find a stolen gun, they will complete an investigation to see if it has been used in a crime, and if not, will attempt to return it to its rightful owner.
The event takes place on Saturday, March 16, 11 a.m. - 3 p.m. at the Dorsey Building located at 9250 Bendix Road, Columbia.

Why not give the "unwanted" guns to the poor that want and need to protect themselves and their families but can't afford to buy a gun from the local gun shop and don't want to buy one "off the streets?" It's not like they're going to find anything at any gun shop in Maryland anyway with the way the government is trying to disarm our citizens. In fact this whole buy-back ploy is aimed at the very same goal of disarming law-abiding citizens. Does anyone really think any criminal is going to sell his/her gun to the cops? Starting to choke on my laughter!

The civil rights deniers screwed the poor with their Saturday Night Special ban in 1990. you know, the cheap handguns that were the only ones the poor could buy to defend themselves. after that ban deaths went up since the caliber got bigger and more powerful than the SNS. More ignorant work by the civil rights denying fascists.

I agree, they need to be put into the hands of responsible White people who don't have the money to buy there own, or give it to the elderly they are usually the victims of black on white crime which is the highest it has ever been in Maryland and the united states! (but the media does not report on it)

"gun buyback"? How can they buy back something they never owned in the first place? What ignorant use of the American language.

What point is a program to pay for firearms? To lower the crime rate? To fool more people into becoming victims? It seems you sir missed the point!

I like the part about you remaining anonymous. The minute you pull up in your car, they can run your tag and have all your information in a matter of seconds. Then who's to say a database isn't created? "for future use".

what kind of liberal idiot would go turn their gun in anyway. I mean with all the economical problems crime has been steadily going up, break-ins, vehicle theft, assaults it is all on the rise, and these animals who commit these crimes need to be put down. If nothing else they can serve as examples of what not to do!

I just hope they don't use any of the turned in firearms as propaganda to inflate statistics - "Look at all the firearms we got off the streets of Howard County!"
DC Metro police are famous for doing that...

Shame is - some old widow will probably turn in her hubby's old Thompson or other pre 86 class III, transferable firearm - worth 10-20K - for a 100 dollars...and then it will be destroyed and taken out of circulation forever.
