Family of Six Displaced After House Fire

Crews from four counties came together to knock down the Mt. Airy blaze.

A family of six was displaced after a Thursday evening fire in Mt. Airy which was fought by four different counties, according to a Howard County Fire and Rescue Services spokeswoman.

HCFRS responded to a report of a house fire at the 1600 block of Long Corner Road just after 6 p.m. Thursday, according to spokeswoman Jacqueline Cutler. When they arrived at the single-family home, there was heavy fire coming from the roof and windows, Cutler said.

The six residents who were in the house had evacuated before fire crews arrived; they were safe, but have been displaced and are being assisted by the Red Cross, according to Cutler.

Extra tanker units from Carroll and Frederick Counties came out to transport water from Howard County’s rural water cistern and from the Patuxent River, Cutler said. Baltimore County also assisted in the fight.

In all, Cutler said, more than 30 units came together to fight the blaze, using a specialized large diameter hose, according to Cutler, along with traditional firefighting gear.

The crews were able to get the fire under control by about 7:40, Cutler said. There were no injuries. The fire is under investigation.

Here is the real story. The above story has a few problems with it such as there were no Baltimore County units on the scene and they also did not use a specialized hose for watersupply. And I would also like everyone reading to know that while HCDFRS is a career Department. The actual first due Fire Departments were both fully staffed by volunteers and not a single paid person was on either of the first arriving fire engines. The Departments were Lisbon VOLUNTEER fire company and Mount Airy VOLUNTEER fire company.

Firefighter4, I was the "Patch Staff" that wrote this... thanks much for the input. The info came from HCFRDS -- do you have a suggestion as to how I can quickly get more detailed info as to what companies, in particular, respond to incidents? I'm in awe of the idea of volunteer fire fighters, so believe that I wasn't intentionally trying to shortchange anyone.

Thanks for the clarification and feel free to email me if you'd like, brandie@patch.com.

The article doesn't give the full story...the fire started at 5:15pm and it was close to 10:00 before all was said and done. I know, I was there, I lived in that house. We are displaced and frazzled. The house will take approximately 6 months to rebuild and we will be dire need for donations for contents in the house. Can anyone help??? Please email me at "honlulusunshine@yahoo.com".
