Although it's been open for a month and a half, Shoppers Food & Pharmacy is hosting an open house and ribbon-cutting Tuesday night, officially signaling its grand opening.

Shoppers, owned by Supervalu Inc., opened on July 16, replacing Superfresh, which filed for bankruptcy in June and closed or sold more than 20 grocery stores in Maryland.

The sale to Shoppers was completed in mid-June.

As part of Tuesday's ceremony, Shoppers executives will donate $1,000 each to the Ulman Cancer Fund for Young Adults, Meals on Wheels of Central Maryland and the Chesapeake Bay Foundation.

"We are extremely excited to formally open the Ellicott City location,” Shoppers' President Tim Lowe said in a statement released Tuesday by the company. 

“Since taking possession just over a month ago, our mission has been to turn this store into a destination aimed at meeting the needs of our new neighbors and friends in the Ellicott City community," the statement read. "As a company, we have worked incredibly hard to transform this location in a short period of time, and I want to thank all of our associates for their dedication to creating what we think is the ultimate shopping experience in the area.”

The ribbon-cutting is scheduled for 6 p.m.
