High School Sophomores Can Apply for Leadership U
High school sophomores who are interested in developing leadership skills and learning more about Howard County are invited to apply to Leadership U, a leadership development and community service program sponsored by Leadership Howard County.
Designed for students entering their junior year in high school, the Leadership U program empowers students to learn by doing. Students work in teams to discuss, reflect upon and develop solutions for problems that affect them and their peers in the community. They also develop mentoring relationships with adult community leaders, learn about Howard County’s government, businesses and services, and hone their presentation skills.
The program includes:
- A week-long summer program of teambuilding, skill development, tours of county facilities, and identification of issues facing Howard County.
- A fall session working with an adult mentor focusing on a community service project.
- A Shadow Day in October, providing an opportunity for students to spend a day with a business or community leaders in their field of interest.
High school sophomores who live in Howard County are eligible to apply. Students may attend public or private school, or be home-schooled.
Participants are selected based on a written application and personal interview. Information and applications are available online at www.leadershiphc.org
